What you need to know and how we support your child
The IEB (Independent Examinations Board) is a globally recognised, ethical assessment agency rooted in Africa. It advances quality teaching and learning through innovative and relevant assessments and conducts the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations for Grade 12, aligned to the South African Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS). At Global Tutors we specialise in CAPS Maths Tutoring and support IEB and NSC students through syllabus-aligned tutoring and exam preparation. We recommend a tutor based on your child's subject, level, and goals.
CAPS Maths Tutoring requires clear problem-solving, logical structure, and fluency with the formulae and methods examiners expect. We build confidence through worked examples and past-paper practice.
Whether your child is in Grade 10, 11, or 12, our tutors help your child build strong foundations and then focus on exam technique, past papers, and the question styles used by the IEB for CAPS Maths. The IEB publishes NSC Subject Assessment Guidelines and past papers with marking guidelines; we use these to shape revision and practise.
Our tutors understand the IEB and NSC assessment structure: school-based assessment (SBA) and final examinations. Sessions are one-to-one and scheduled around your school commitments and time zone.

Cover the curriculum systematically using CAPS and the IEB NSC Subject Assessment Guidelines. Build strong foundations in core topics so your child can apply knowledge in exams. We use past papers and marking guidelines to show what is expected.
From Grade 11 or early Grade 12
NSC past papers and marking guidelines
Practise with IEB NSC past papers under exam conditions. Use the official marking guidelines (available on the IEB website) to see how marks are awarded. Identify question types and cognitive levels so your child prepares for the full range.
As per school deadlines
School-based assessment (SBA)
Complete SBA tasks with support on planning, structure, and analysis. We guide planning and feedback, but we do not write or complete assessed work for the student.
Months before finals
Final revision and exam readiness
Target weak areas and do full past papers under timed conditions. Focus on time management, question interpretation, and the presentation examiners expect. Avoid cramming; consistent revision over months works best.
Tactics
- Use IEB NSC past papers and marking guidelines from the IEB website (Resources) or your child's school.
- Study in blocks (e.g. 50 minutes) with breaks; tackle harder subjects when you are freshest.
- Create a revision timetable and stick to it; start at least 2-3 months before exams.
- Practise under exam conditions: time limits, no notes, quiet environment.
- Ask for help early; do not leave concept gaps or SBA to the last minute.
Recommended approach
The South African Department of Basic Education and IEB recommend starting exam preparation early, using past papers, and studying in a structured way. Create a timetable and dedicate 3-4 hours daily to revision in the run-up to exams.
Use past papers and marking guidelines so you know the format and how marks are awarded. Study harder subjects first when your child is fresh, and use active techniques (summaries, practice questions) rather than passive reading.
Avoid cramming in the final days; it increases stress and does not build long-term understanding. Our tutors can align this approach to your subjects and help your child target the topics and question types that will make the biggest difference to their results.
