AP Calc AB vs BC: which calculus course to take

Global TutorsOctober 14, 2026

AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC share a name, a skill set and an exam date, but they differ in scope. BC covers everything in AB and then adds two full units and extra topics in the same school year. This guide explains the differences using the College Board's course and exam information, and gives a practical way to choose.

AP Calc AB vs BC: the short answer

The College Board says AP Calculus AB focuses on topics taught in a college-equivalent first-semester calculus class. AP Calculus BC focuses on topics covered in both first- and second-semester calculus classes.

All topics in the eight units of AB are included in BC. BC then adds two more units (Units 9 and 10) and some extra topics in Units 6 to 8.

What both courses cover

These eight units are taught in both AB and BC:

  1. Limits and continuity
  2. Differentiation: definition and fundamental properties
  3. Differentiation: composite, implicit and inverse functions
  4. Contextual applications of differentiation
  5. Analytical applications of differentiation
  6. Integration and accumulation of change
  7. Differential equations
  8. Applications of integration

The College Board says the prerequisites for both courses are comparable. It recommends taking maths courses that cover algebra, geometry, trigonometry, analytic geometry and elementary functions first.

What only BC covers

These topics are taught only in AP Calculus BC:

  • Additional techniques of integration (Unit 6).
  • Euler's method and logistic models with differential equations (Unit 7).
  • Arc length and distance traveled along a smooth curve (Unit 8).
  • Parametric equations, polar coordinates and vector-valued functions (Unit 9).
  • Infinite sequences and series (Unit 10).

The chart shows how the ten units split between the two courses.

List of the 10 AP Calculus units showing Units 1 to 8 in both AB and BC, and Units 9 and 10 in BC only, at 10 to 15% and 15 to 20% of the BC exam

On the BC exam, Unit 9 counts for 10% to 15% of the exam score and Unit 10 for 15% to 20%, according to the College Board's BC course page. Together that's 25% to 35% of the BC exam on content AB students don't study, before counting the BC-only topics in Units 6 to 8.

The exam format from May 2027

Both exams use the same format, and the College Board has updated the multiple-choice questions and timing starting with the May 2027 exams. Each exam is 3 hours 10 minutes:

  • Section I, multiple choice: 42 questions in 1 hour 40 minutes, 50% of the score.
  • Part A: 29 questions in 62 minutes, no calculator.
  • Part B: 13 questions in 38 minutes, graphing calculator required.
  • Section II, free response: 6 questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, 50% of the score.
  • Part A: 2 questions in 30 minutes, graphing calculator required.
  • Part B: 4 questions in 60 minutes, no calculator.

Both are hybrid digital exams. Students answer multiple-choice questions and view free-response questions in the Bluebook testing app, then handwrite their free-response answers in paper exam booklets.

In 2027, both exams are on Monday, May 10, in Session 1. The late-testing date for both is Thursday, May 20, in Session 2.

The AB subscore on the BC exam

A student who takes the BC exam gets an AB subscore from 1 to 5, as well as the BC score. The subscore shows how they did on the part of the exam devoted to AB topics, which is approximately 60% of the exam.

The College Board recommends that colleges treat the AB subscore the same way they would treat an AP Calculus AB Exam score. So a BC student who handles the AB content well but struggles with series still has an AB result to show.

One more rule: a student may not take both the AB and BC exams in the same year.

Two quick examples of the difference

These practice examples were written for this guide.

A typical AB-level integral. The definite integral of 3x² from 0 to 2 is [x³] from 0 to 2, which is 8 - 0 = 8.

A BC-only idea: an infinite series. The geometric series 1 + 1/3 + 1/9 + 1/27 + ... has first term 1 and common ratio 1/3. Because the ratio is between -1 and 1, the series converges, and its sum is 1 ÷ (1 - 1/3) = 3/2.

Series questions like this one sit in Unit 10, the more heavily weighted of the two BC-only units.

How to choose between AB and BC

  1. Check how secure the prerequisites are. Both courses build on algebra, trigonometry and functions. Gaps there affect both courses, and BC covers more content in the same time.
  2. Look at the extra content honestly. BC covers everything in AB plus two more units in the same school year.
  3. Think about the next maths course. AB maps to a first-semester college course. BC maps to first- and second-semester content. Check how the colleges your child is considering award credit for each.
  4. Talk to the school. Course availability, sequencing and the teacher's recommendation all matter.
  5. Remember the subscore. A BC student still receives an AB subscore, which colleges are encouraged to treat like an AB score.

FAQ

Is AP Calc BC harder than AB?

BC covers more content: all of AB, plus Units 9 and 10 and extra topics in Units 6 to 8. The skills are the same, but there's more to learn in the same time.

Can I take AP Calc BC without taking AB first?

The College Board says the prerequisites for the two courses are comparable, so AB isn't listed as a requirement for BC. Schools set their own course sequences.

Can I take both the AB and BC exams?

Not in the same year. The College Board doesn't allow it.

What is the AB subscore?

A 1 to 5 score for the AB portion of the BC exam, about 60% of the exam, reported alongside the BC score.

When is the 2027 AP Calculus exam?

Monday, May 10, 2027, Session 1, for both AB and BC.
