What you need to know about PTE Academic

What the test is, and how the lessons follow it.

PTE Academic is the Pearson Test of English. It is a computer-based English test for study, work, or migration. It is not a school subject, and it is not a Pearson Edexcel International GCSE or A Level.

The test covers speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Scores run from 10 to 90 on the Global Scale of English. The overall score is not a simple average of the four skill scores.

Lessons are one-to-one and follow the computer-based task types. Tell us your target score and the test date if you have one. We do not book the test for you.

IELTS is a different test, with band scores from 1 to 9 and a choice of Academic or General Training. Check which test the institution or authority accepts.

What we cover

What we cover for PTE Academic

The tasks we practise. This is not a school syllabus.

  • What PTE Academic is

A computer-based English test from Pearson, used for study, work, or migration. It is separate from Pearson Edexcel International GCSE and A Level.

  • The four skills

Speaking, writing, reading, and listening are all on the test. Several tasks combine skills, so practice follows the computer-based format.

  • The score scale

Scores run from 10 to 90 on the Global Scale of English. The overall score is not a simple average of the skill scores. Bring the score you have been asked for.

  • How it differs from IELTS

IELTS uses band scores from 1 to 9 and has Academic and General Training tests. PTE Academic is one computer-based test. Some institutions accept both. They are not the same exam.

  • What we do not do

We do not book the test, and we do not use school English past papers as if they were PTE tasks.

Study strategy

How lessons work for PTE Academic

Name the test, then practise that format. We do not use another exam's syllabus.

  1. 1

    Before the first lesson

    Name the test

Tell us the exact test or course, the score you need, and the date if you have one. We do not book the test for you.

  2. 2

    Before you book

    Meet the tutor

The free Meet and Greet is a conversation. You decide whether the tutor knows the test you are sitting.

  3. 3

    Through the preparation

    Weekly practice

Lessons work through the tasks for that test, at your pace.

  4. 4

    As the sitting approaches

    Timed practice

Closer to the sitting, lessons use the timing and task types of that test. We do not invent a test date.

Tactics

  • Bring the score the institution has asked for.

  • Practise the PTE Academic task types only.

  • Do not mix PTE practice with IELTS papers.

Recommended approach

Start while there is time to practise each part of the test. A short block of lessons can still help if the date is close, as long as we know which test you are sitting.
