What you need to know about research skills

What this support covers, and how the lessons work.

Research skills are how a student plans an investigation, finds sources they can trust, keeps notes, and cites them. This is not a school subject by itself.

Bring the brief. A school project, a science practical write-up, and an IB Extended Essay do not follow the same rules. We use the rules for the task you have.

We help choose a question that can actually be answered, and we look at whether a source is reliable. We do not invent citations.

We do not write the report, the essay, or the internal assessment. Your child does that, with feedback on the plan and the draft.

What we offer

  • A question that fits the brief

  • Sources you can explain, not a random list

  • Notes and citations in the form the task asks for

  • We do not write the project

Need help with a research task?

Research skills cover the question, the sources, the notes, and the citations. Bring the brief. We do not write the project.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • Starting to write before the question is clear.

The first lessons pin down the question and what would count as an answer.

  • Citing sources you have not read.

We use sources your child can explain. We do not add references for show.

  • Asking a tutor to write the report.

We comment on the plan and the draft. Your child writes it.

What we cover

What we cover for research skills

What a tutor helps with. We do not do the work for you.

  • The question

We narrow the brief into a question your child can answer in the time and length they have.

  • Sources

How to tell a usable source from a weak one, and how to read it for the point you need.

  • Notes and citations

A way to record where an idea came from, in the style the task asks for. We do not fabricate references.

  • The write-up

Feedback on structure and on whether the draft answers the question. The writing stays your child's.

Common mistakes

And how working with a private online tutor can help your child avoid them

Starting to write before the question is clear.

The first lessons pin down the question and what would count as an answer.

Citing sources you have not read.

We use sources your child can explain. We do not add references for show.

Asking a tutor to write the report.

We comment on the plan and the draft. Your child writes it.

Study strategy

How lessons work for research skills

Name the task, then work on that. We do not do it for you.

  1. 1

    Before the first lesson

    Name the task

Tell us the subject, the curriculum if there is one, and the deadline. Bring the brief or the homework.

  2. 2

    Before you book

    Meet the tutor

The free Meet and Greet is a conversation. You decide whether the tutor understands the task.

  3. 3

    While the task is open

    Weekly lessons

Lessons explain the work and practise the next step. Your child does the piece that will be handed in.

  4. 4

    Before the deadline

    Feedback

The tutor comments on your child's draft or working. We do not rewrite it.

Tactics

  • Bring the question, the worksheet, or the university page.

  • Say if this is assessed work.

  • Book a subject tutor as well if the gap is the syllabus.

Recommended approach

Start when the task is set, not the night before it is due. A short run of lessons can still help if the deadline is close, as long as your child is doing the writing.

What your child will achieve

What you can expect from research skills tutoring

Realistic outcomes when your child commits to the process

  • A question that matches the brief

  • A short list of sources your child has actually used

  • Citations in the form the task requires

  • A draft that is still your child's work

A tutor explains and gives feedback. We do not do the homework, essay, research, or application for you, and we do not guarantee a grade or a place.

Frequently asked questions about research skills

Will you research the topic for my child?

We teach a way to find and judge sources, and we look at sources together. We do not hand over a finished bibliography or a finished paper.

Can you help with an Extended Essay?

We can help with the question, the plan, and feedback on a draft, within IB rules. We do not write the essay.

What if we do not have the brief yet?

Bring whatever the school has issued. If there is no brief, we wait until there is one rather than inventing a project.
