IB vs AP: how the two programs compare
Global TutorsOctober 16, 2026
Families choosing a demanding high school pathway may compare the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme with Advanced Placement (AP) courses. They're built differently. The IB Diploma is a complete two-year program with a required core. AP is subject by subject, with each course ending in its own exam. This guide compares them using what the IB and the College Board publish.
IB vs AP: the key difference
The IB Diploma Programme is designed for students aged 16 to 19 and is taught in the last two years of secondary school. A diploma student takes six subjects: at least one from each of five groups (language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, and mathematics), plus an arts subject or, instead, an additional sciences, individuals and societies or languages subject. They also complete the DP core:
- Theory of knowledge (TOK).
- The extended essay (EE): an independent research project that ends in a 4,000-word paper.
- Creativity, activity, service (CAS).
AP is a set of separate college-level courses. Each AP course ends in a May exam, and students choose which courses and exams to take, from what their school offers. There's no required core.
Students don't always have to choose all or nothing. The IB says students can take individual DP courses, such as Mathematics HL or Economics SL, without enrolling in the full diploma. They receive DP Course Results for each one instead of the diploma.
Workload and depth
In the IB Diploma, students take three or four subjects at higher level (HL), with 240 recommended teaching hours each, and the rest at standard level (SL), with 150 hours each. HL and SL differ in scope but are assessed against the same grade descriptors.
AP courses are college-level courses, and the College Board relates some of them to specific college classes. For example, the College Board says AP Calculus AB focuses on topics taught in a first-semester college calculus class, while AP Calculus BC covers topics from both first- and second-semester calculus classes.
The workload is structured differently. The IB adds the EE, TOK and CAS on top of six subjects for two years. With AP, the load depends entirely on how many courses a student takes.
How IB and AP are scored
The two programs use different scales, so a grade in one doesn't translate directly into the other.

IB:
- Each subject is graded from 1 to 7.
- TOK and the EE add up to 3 points through the core points matrix.
- The diploma total is out of 45. A student needs at least 24 points and must meet the IB's other conditions to be awarded the diploma.
- For most courses, written exams at the end of the DP form the basis of the assessment. In most subjects, students also complete in-school assessment tasks, which are either externally assessed or marked by teachers and then moderated by the IB.
AP:
- Each exam is scored on a 5-point scale.
- For most exams, the score is a weighted combination of the multiple-choice and free-response sections. The assessments for some courses, including AP Seminar, AP Research and AP Computer Science Principles, are different.
- Multiple-choice answers are scored by computer. Free-response answers are scored at the annual AP Reading in the first two weeks of June, by college professors and experienced AP teachers.
College credit and admissions
AP: the College Board says many US colleges grant credit, advanced placement or both for scores of 3 and above. It also says colleges want to see that students are taking the most rigorous coursework available to them, and that enrolling in AP courses shows a student is interested in challenging themselves.
IB: the IB says many universities often use a 4 or a 5 in a subject as the minimum for granting admission or advanced placement. Its general regulations say the IB doesn't guarantee recognition, and that students and their families bear the sole responsibility for checking the entry requirements of the universities they're interested in.
For both programs, the step that matters is the same: look up the credit and admissions policies of the colleges your child is considering. Policies differ between colleges, and a strong score earns credit at one college but not at another.
Exams, timing and cost
- AP: the 2027 AP Exams run from May 3 to 7 and May 10 to 14, 2027, with late testing from May 17 to 21. Exams cost $99 each in the US, US territories, Canada and DoWEA schools, and $129 at schools outside the US. Schools may charge more to cover administration.
- IB: DP assessments run in May and November sessions. Students can't register themselves: the school's DP coordinator registers each student and the school pays the related fees.
How to choose between IB and AP
These questions can help:
- What does your child's school actually offer? Start with the program, or the AP courses, the school runs.
- Does your child want breadth or focus? The IB requires languages, a science, maths, humanities and the core. AP lets a student go deep in subjects they choose and drop others.
- How do they handle long projects? The 4,000-word EE and the TOK essay reward independent research and writing over many months.
- Where will they apply? Look up how the colleges on their list treat IB scores and AP scores, both for admissions and for credit.
- How do they cope with sustained workload? The IB's two-year structure means steady work across all subjects. AP workload can be adjusted year by year.
FAQ
Is IB harder than AP?
They're demanding in different ways. The IB requires six subjects plus the EE, TOK and CAS over two years. AP's difficulty depends on how many courses a student takes and which ones.
Do colleges prefer IB or AP?
Each college sets its own policies on admissions and credit. The College Board says colleges want to see the most rigorous coursework available to a student, so the real question is which demanding option your child's school offers and suits them best.
Can a student take IB courses without doing the full diploma?
Yes. The IB lets students take individual DP courses and receive DP Course Results for them.
How is an AP score different from an IB grade?
An AP score runs from 1 to 5 for each exam. An IB grade runs from 1 to 7 for each subject, and the diploma total is out of 45.
Who registers students for IB and AP exams?
For the IB, the school's DP coordinator registers students for each exam session. For AP, exams are ordered through the school, and the College Board's ordering deadline is November 13; exams for full-year or first-semester courses ordered after that incur a $40 late order fee per exam.
